Mapungubwe National Park

Mapungubwe National Park

3 Days

Overview

Mapungubwe National Park is a unique and historically rich national park located in the far north of South Africa, where the borders of South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe meet. It’s part of the larger Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for both its natural beauty and archaeological significance.

The park is best known as the center of the ancient Kingdom of Mapungubwe, which thrived between the 11th and 13th centuries. This was one of southern Africa’s earliest complex societies, involved in trade networks that reached as far as China and India. Artifacts like the famous gold rhino were discovered here, symbolizing early African civilization and wealth.

Unlike Kruger National Park, which is dense with wildlife, Mapungubwe offers a quieter, more reflective experience. You’ll still find animals like elephants, giraffes, leopards, and various antelope species, but the park is less crowded and more focused on landscape and heritage.

The scenery is striking and varied—think sandstone formations, baobab trees, riverine forests, and wide-open savannah. One of the highlights is Mapungubwe Hill, where ancient royalty once lived, and the Confluence Viewpoint, where you can see the Limpopo and Shashe rivers meet—along with views into three countries at once.
